The Greek research center is preparing a proposal for the HORIZON-JU-CBE-2025 call titled SAFEBIOPOL – Safe and Sustainable by Design Engineering for the Cost-Effective Production of Bio-based Polymers and Co-Polymers. The project aims to develop safe-by-design, cost-effective bio-based polymers, primarily polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and co-polymers, for advanced applications in food and pharmaceutical packaging.
It addresses upstream and downstream process optimization for PHB production, including life cycle and toxicological assessments and performance testing across various use cases. A strong emphasis is placed on Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology, regulatory compliance, and industrial scalability.
To complete the consortium, the research center is looking for two industry partners. The first is a food packaging company with experience in biodegradable materials and technologies, able to support the development and validation of PHB-based packaging applications. The second is a pharmaceutical manufacturer interested in the development of biodegradable PHB-based nanoparticles or carriers for sustained drug delivery lasting several weeks, contributing to the design and preclinical testing of pharmaceutical applications.
